“Know, first, who you are, and then adorn yourself accordingly.”

This lovely quote can be found in my display case, printed on marketing materials and on my website, because it speaks so honestly to my mission.

A Greek sage and philosopher, Epictetus was born a slave in AD55 in what is now Turkey.  He was convinced that all external events were determined by fate, and are thus beyond our control.  And much like Buddha’s principles, Epictetus saw that suffering occurs from trying to control what is uncontrollable, or from neglecting what is within our power.

The mission of my work is tangled in the innate sense of joy, spirit of discipline and optimism that I arrived with.   The sheer bliss of accepting yourself, how and what you are, is immeasurable.  We all know it as children and then quickly it becomes covered in doubt, judgment and fear.

Jewelry that is made in my studio is made with the spirit of that childlike fearlessness.

The act of designing, finishing and selling is all fueled with an audacity and naivete that I haven’t been able to shake.   Epictetus said a few other things that ring true for me… “If you want to improve, be content to be thought foolish and stupid”.   I’d say I pretty much nailed that.

He also is known for the following:
“As part of the universal city that is the universe, it is our duty to care for all our fellow men.”

This is my way to care.  Is it insignificant?  Brilliant?  Will my mission make a difference?  I don’t know.  But crafting silver and gold into symbols of faith, respect and delight brings me closer to my true self.  Spending time with customers, clients and friends as they select a necklace or bracelet resonates within me.  Talking with folks about shopping local, investigating the origins of each purchase and considering the big picture of your choices, that all feels right.

You have the right to know who you are, you have the responsibility to claim it and I have the honor to help you adorn, accordingly.

Amy
